Computers 2- 1st Week of Class!

Welcome! BOOKMARK MY BLOG! We will be using this site throughout the course. There is also a link from the school website to it.

1) Check out the course syllabus. Post any questions you have.

2) Please download and print this contract. Your parent/guardian must sign it before class on 2/4. This will count as a grade.

3) On the last day of the school week, you must have researched, read, and summarized a technology related article to be presented in class. The summary must be typed up and put in your own words. Do not read the article verbatim. Use websites such as: news.com, cnn.com, businessweek.com, etc and visit the technology areas of those sites. Find an article that interests you, read it, and then post a brief summary of it on your blog. You must include a hyperlink to the article on your posting. The subject of the post will be: (‘Date Due’ Weekly Tech Article). You will then present this article to the class that week.

The articles can be new products, reviews, and other various technologies. Remember, technology is a very broad term and is not just computers. These articles will introduce you to new websites, terminology, and products that you may not be familiar with.

This assignment will count towards your Class Participation/Homework grade. If you are absent on the last day of the week, you are exempt from that week’s article. If you are absent the day before the last day of the week, you are required complete the assignment.

You will not be allowed to read from a website. You must display your blog and read from there. Completing these assignments will boost your average. Want the best grade? Embed a video, add images, etc. Failure to complete them will result in a 0% for that assignment. I will call on students to present their articles one by one. A class/blog discussion on articles is strongly encouraged.

Computers 2: All About Jing

"Jing is a screencasting software launched in 2007 as Jing Project by the TechSmith Corporation. It is currently in version 2.1.9181 and is free to download and use. The software takes a picture or video of the user's computer screen and uploads it to the Web, FTP, computer or clipboard. A URL is automatically created and can be shared with others to view or access the uploaded file. Jing is compatible with Macintosh and Windows. Its simple format and the ability to upload screencasts in SWF format for viewing at screencast.com has made it useful for virtual reference in libraries."

Go to the Jing website and download the free Jing software. Install this software on your computer.

The Jing website provides a great deal of help in getting started. Here is a good overview of Jing.

Here are several YouTube videos about using Jing:

Jing Video 1

Jing Video 2

Please view all the instructions on the Jing website - and then contact Mr. Porfido if you still have questions about getting started.

ASSIGNMENT:
Use Jing to create a  brief overview/tour of your own blog. No more than 30 seconds.

Computers 2: Week of 1/10- Organizing Digital Information

Organizing digital information is becoming a big challenge as people continue to use the World Wide Web in news ways. The ability to recall the locations of favorite web sites, digital pictures, or important documents and email messages is crucial as the amount of data stored on both personal computers and the WWW increases.

Storing photographs or documents in folders on your personal computers is one way to categorize and locate information. Under this scheme, you might organize your digital pictures on your personal computer in folders according to the years that you took them, and then store related photos in folders beneath each year.

What another way we can organize your computers? What about email? Your Favorite Websites? Your Blog Posts? RSS Feeds? Reply to this post with specific way, websites that can help you, and anything else you would want to add.

Assignment:
Search my tags and library:
1) Choose 3 bookmarks that interest you, can assist you in school or personally. Why did you choose them?
2) Browse all the Web 2.0 bookmarks, find 1 tool that you think would be great to apply and use it. Don't use Google Docs, Jing, or another tool we have used during this semester. Be creative, you will then present your tool to the class.

Computers 1: Week of 1/3/2011

Welcome Back!

Creating a Worksheet and Embedded Chart Using Google Docs Spreadsheets

For this assignment, you must only use Google Docs and not Excel. While the steps & screenshots will be different in the book compared to Google Docs, you will utilize the HELP, your fellow students, and myself to complete the spreadsheet.

You must name your file: LASTNAME MUSIC and drag it into your Excel folder in order to receive credit. Too many of you rush the project only to receive no credit because there was no file for me to grade.

This project begins on page E 1.06 and ends on E 1.55. The due date is Thursday, Jan 6.

The colors and font styles can differ from the book. Try your best. Using the HELP system of Google Docs will make you a better web problem solver.

Welcome Back!

Do Now:

Create a new blog post about how you keep your computer organized. How do you store photos, documents, videos, etc. Do you use a hierarchical or nonhierarchical system?
